To accommodate the 150 new codes and the 50 code changes in the 2023 ICD-10-CM release (effective October 1), IMO Health processed over 7,000 ICD-10-CM adjustments for this Terminology Portal release.
This release includes updates for coding needs related to social determinants of health (SDOH) – like transportation insecurity, financial instability, and material hardship; along with many other new Z-code modifications classified as factors influencing health status.
IMO Health is dedicated to an ongoing effort to increase the use of fair and equitable terminology in healthcare. For the September 2022 release, we focused on replacing or removing terminology that is potentially harmful – specifically updating euthanasia content with the suggested replacement of encounter for assistance in dying and inactivating outdated and offensive terms to describe neurodivergency and other cognitive differences wherever possible. For several years, IMO Health has had the term monkeypox mapped to ICD-10-CM code B04. With the rapidly increasing spread of this disease, we added several new monkeypox-related terms to the September 2022 regulatory release – mapped to the new SNOMED CT and ICD-10-CM codes. Together, the new terms have use cases similar to terminology widely used for COVID-19.
SNOMED CT® maps have been updated to reflect changes from the July 31, 2022, International update, which includes replacing any codes that SNOMED inactivated. All new monkeypox-related SNOMED CT codes have been added, along with one new coronavirus SNOMED CT code to describe “breakthrough” COVID-19 infection.
