The challenge
As the health system worked to optimize operating room (OR) performance across its perioperative sites, improving surgical case duration predictions became a key focus.
Over time, the organization’s surgical dictionary had evolved to include multiple ways to document similar procedures. These variations made it difficult to consistently align procedure selection with how case duration was actually calculated in the EHR. Because predictions of case duration relied on historical data, different selections could impact the accuracy of estimated procedure times.
The solution
The health system implemented IMO Core Periop to integrate standardized, CPT®-aligned surgical terminology into existing EHR workflows. This helped clinicians and schedulers more consistently select the appropriate procedures at the time of scheduling, while reducing time spent maintaining and updating the surgical dictionary.
Key results
Standardizing procedure terminology strengthened the reliability of data used for case duration predictions across perioperative sites. As a result, four sites achieved a 21% average increase in case duration accuracy in three months, supporting:
- More predictable surgical schedules
- Better alignment between planned and actual procedure times
- More efficient use of operating room capacity
