4 things to know: IMO Health’s June clinical terminology release

IMO Health updates its clinical terminology several times a year, ensuring each Regulatory release is as smooth as possible for clients. Here are some recent highlights.
JUNEClinicalTermRelease

Grounded in industry-leading clinical terminology, IMO Health’s solutions are integral to the function of electronic health records (EHRs) throughout the country. And a major reason why 89% of US physicians, nurses, and PAs have relied on our solutions year after year is our commitment to continuously updating our terminology content so it is always current, accurate, and easy to integrate.

Want to know more about what you’ll find in our latest terminology release?* Here are four highlights:

1. SNOMED® additions related to SDOH

This update contains just over 60 new SNOMED CT codes that were matched up to an existing IMO Health concept or migrated to a new one. A large percentage of these terms pertain to social determinants of health (SDOH).

Example: 671351000124100 | Able to afford medical expenses (finding)

2. Fair and equitable terminology

In our ongoing commitment to providing fair and equitable terminology, we continue to evaluate and update the use of words that may stigmatize or be offensive while maintaining connections to underlying historical terms and coding in standard sets behind the scenes as necessary.

For the June 2023 release, we focused on replacing or removing terminology that is potentially harmful. There were 39 terms removed or replaced in this release, including some noteworthy categories:

  • Leprosy – All leprosy terms were updated with lexicals identifying a form of Hansen’s disease
  • Handicap – All handicap terms were updated with lexicals to identify these terms as intellectual disabilities or developmental disabilities

3. ICD-O-3.2

ICD-O-3.2 codes have been added to support clients doing cancer register reporting. These codes represent a dual classification system designed to capture a code and a histology code for each neoplasm.

4. Modifier updates

Finally, the obesity affecting pregnancy modifier content has been enhanced. Prompts now include trimester and obesity type.
